County Fair.

I had the best weekend yet! Saturday morning started out bright and early volunteering at the Deanna Rose Farmstead. They were hosting their annual "Chicken Run" which is a race for little kids. My job was to man one of the games. The object of this game was to throw a water-soaked Nerf football and hit a wood cut out of a fox head (which inevitably would save little chickens). There were eight foxes to aim at. It became a little stressful for me when I could not think of the plural of fox. Foxes? Fox? Foxi? Foxen? Anyway, after my initial panic of teaching children incorrect grammar, I resorted to just saying, "try to hit a fox." I know it doesn't seem like a big deal, but it was stressing me out. :) After the games, the run started and kids were racing around a track. It was pretty much adorable.

After that a few of us went to Ihop and had a blast. I'm excited that I'm finally making some friends out here. Good thing too because I was getting kind of bored!

Later that night, we went to dinner and then to a demolition derby at a county fair. On the way to dinner, my friend Brittany and I saw this nun and just had to take a picture with her.

Sister Charles McGrath was missing her middle finger, half of the paint on her face, and was all-in-all pretty creepy. We loved her anyway.

Then we headed over to the fair. I can't even begin to describe the crowd to you. We were surrounded by men in overalls, a couple of gangsters, a girl with the most amazing turtle-shell backpack, baby daddy's and momma's, rednecks, men with beards tied in knots, etc. It was incredible and probably my favorite part of the fair. Brittany and I had pretty good seats.

Prepping the mud. We got nailed with several chunks of mud as the cars were flying around. I had a couple of huge globs in my hair and a few skid marks on my jeans.
Pile up!
This guy won the first round. It was pretty amazing. The second round was even more fun. Cars were losing all sorts of fluids, wheels were bent out of control, and one car even caught on fire!

You can't really see it, but the fire started in the backseat. All of the other cars were over to the left crashing in to one another and this driver started frantically waving trying to get the ref's attention. We looked over and flames were coming up out of his back window. It was so scary! The ref's didn't notice so the whole crowd stood up and started yelling until he paid attention. Luckily there were firemen to hose it down.
This is how they get the cars that can no longer drive out of the arena.

During intermission, Brittany and I decided to go ride some rides. Good thing we did because after the derby was over, the lines were out of control!
This is the first one we went on. It didn't look too bad until we actually got on. I think I was more scared for my life on this ride than I have ever been.

Right before it started...

...during. That's pure terror in her eyes.

It was such a fun night in Kansas! I'm hoping for another adventure soon. :)
